geology and topography of Southwark, central London

The underlying geology of this area of Southwark consists of alluvial silts overlying sand and gravel flood plain deposits.

North Southwark lies over sand capped gravel islands or 'eyots' that lay within a much wider River Thames.

These islands would have been formed by glacial drifts after the end of the last Ice Age, c 10,000 years ago.
